Brazil Crosses 1,800 Biogas Plants as Scale and Efficiency Define the Next Phase

Brazil closed 2025 with 1,803 registered biogas plants and production approaching 5 billion Nm³ per year, with a 5% increase in the number of units and a 6% rise in volume produced year-over-year, according to data from CIBiogás. What the numbers reveal is a market maturing beyond simple expansion: fewer new plants are entering per year, but those coming online are larger and more productive. The distribution of production remains concentrated. São Paulo alone accounts for approximately 4.9 million Nm³ per day, but Paraná and Minas Gerais are growing above the national average, and the North and Northeast remain significantly underexploited. The more strategically important signal is the shift in end use: electricity generation still dominates at approximately 62%, but biomethane now accounts for roughly 34% of total volume despite representing a smaller share of plant count. Ukraine Formalizes Its Biomethane Ambitions with a Government-Backed Programme Through 2035

Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has approved a national Biomethane Production Development Programme running through 2035, targeting 1 billion cubic metres of output per year by 2030 and 2.1 billion cubic metres by 2035. Ireland's €80M Cork Plant Presses Forward as the EU Blocks a Key Support Mechanism

Stream BioEnergy has broken ground on an €80 million biomethane facility in Little Island, Cork. Backed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Pioneer Infrastructure Partners, even as the European Commission issued a formal detailed opinion blocking the domestic biomethane multiplier under Ireland's proposed Renewable Heat Obligation. The multiplier would have allowed one unit of Irish-produced biomethane to count as 1.5 units toward compliance, favoring domestic supply. The Commission found this incompatible with EU internal market rules. The Irish Bioenergy Association has called 2026 a "make-or-break year" for the sector. What this situation illustrates is a structural tension between national biomethane strategies and EU single market rules that Ireland is the first to hit at scale, but is unlikely to be the last. The Cork project's progress signals that well-capitalized, fully contracted projects can absorb regulatory uncertainty. Smaller or earlier-stage developers without secured offtake agreements are far more exposed. The Irish government has separately signalled a €200 million biomethane capital grant scheme later this year, which may provide an alternative pathway if the RHO framework continues to stall.

Stockholm Pipeline Inauguration More Than Doubles Liquefied Biogas Capacity in Huddinge

St1 Biokraft has inaugurated a new gas pipeline connecting its Henriksdal and Gladö Kvarn facilities via Stockholm's gas network. This is an infrastructure completion story more than a new build story. The capital was already deployed; the bottleneck was a missing grid link. It raises a question worth tracking more broadly: across the European biomethane landscape, how much existing or partially deployed capacity is constrained by analogous integration gaps rather than production limitations? Solving for the connection layer, not just the plant layer, is increasingly where the value unlock is occurring.

This is how sector-level trust in specific technology stacks gets built.

Cuba's First Biomethane Plant Enters Final Assembly, Targets Bus Fuelling and Power Generation

The feedstock dependency on pig farming volumes, currently under pressure from food scarcity, is a real operational risk the article candidly acknowledges. But the model; small-scale, locally sourced, transport-integrated, is one that has relevance well beyond Cuba's particular circumstances.

Australian Researchers Solve a Critical Scaling Barrier for Biomethane Grid Injection

The specific technical problem solved relates to siloxane, a compound found in household products that, when burned in biomethane, leaves a glass-like coating on appliances, degrading performance. The team developed a predictive framework, combining simulation and experimental data, to determine how much siloxane can be present for appliances to run reliably, even at concentrations too low to study experimentally directly. This kind of research removes the barriers that stop regulatory frameworks from approving network-scale deployment. The updated standard now gives distributors, manufacturers, and regulators a shared technical foundation to work from. Australia's Malabar Biomethane Facility has already proven injection is possible; this research clarifies what responsible injection looks like at national scale.

Australian Meat Processor Begins Construction of AD Facility Targeting 35,000 Tonnes of Annual Emissions Reductions

Casino Food Co has begun construction of the Casino Biohub, an anaerobic digestion facility at its beef processing operations in northern New South Wales. Developed in partnership with LMS Energy. In the first stage, captured methane will be flared. A second stage is planned to convert biogas into electricity for on-site use. At full commissioning, the project is expected to reduce emissions by approximately 35,000 tonnes of carbon equivalent annually. Roughly equivalent to removing 11,200 cars from the road, and eliminate over 98% of the facility's Scope 1 emissions associated with effluent treatment. This is an important structural story for the Australian market: utility-scale grid injection project, and industrial emissions abatement deployed directly at the point of production. The combination of a University of Melbourne research breakthrough on biomethane standards (above) and this ground-level infrastructure activity illustrates the dual-track nature of Australia's biomethane development. Scientific and commercial, progressing in parallel.

Lithuania Joins European ERGaR Hub, Opening Cross-Border Biomethane Certificate Trading

Amber Grid, Lithuania's gas transmission operator, has joined the ERGaR Hub, the European Renewable Gas Registry platform enabling secure cross-border exchange of guarantees of origin for biomethane. With this integration, Lithuanian producers can now transfer guarantees of origin electronically to Germany, Denmark, and Slovakia. The timing coincides with significant domestic growth: at the start of 2026, Lithuania had 12 operational biomethane plants with a combined capacity of 67 MW, and in January–February alone more than 60 GWh of guarantees of origin were issued. A 2.4-fold increase over the same period in 2025. What this signals is the transition from production to marketability. Growing biomethane volumes are commercially inert without the certificate infrastructure to make them tradeable across borders. By joining ERGaR, Lithuania converts its production growth into market access, directly reaching Germany, the largest biomethane demand market in Europe. This is certificate infrastructure as commercial enablement, and its replication across smaller EU biomethane markets will be a necessary precondition for the cross-border market to function at the scale European policy targets assume.

Shanghai's Songlin Farm Demonstrates a Fully Closed-Loop Pig Waste-to-Biomethane Model

A large-scale pig farm on the outskirts of Shanghai is operating what China Daily describes as a 100% waste conversion system: the Songlin Ecological Agricultural Zone in Jinshan district processes approximately 100,000 metric tonnes of pig waste annually from roughly 80,000 hogs, producing 3.65 million cubic metres of biogas per year. Surplus biogas is purified into biomethane and injected into Shanghai's urban gas pipeline network, the first agricultural project to achieve this in the city. The biogas slurry fertilises 867 hectares of nearby farmland, saving an estimated 2 million yuan in fertiliser costs annually, while CO₂ produced during purification is redirected as gaseous fertiliser for on-site vegetables, reportedly increasing yields by around 20%. What makes this model analytically interesting is the degree of integration: energy, fertiliser, and food production are not separate outputs linked by policy incentives but outputs of a single engineered cycle. The closed-loop framing, where nothing leaves the system as waste, is the direction the global biogas sector is moving. China is doing it at operational scale.

Finnish Cleantech Pilot at German Biogas Site Targets Nutrient Recovery as a Structural Industry Advancement

This enters the newsletter at a moment when EU nitrogen regulation is tightening across member states, and Germany, as Europe's largest biogas producer, is acutely exposed to the regulatory and commercial pressure around digestate management. If that framing holds commercially, it repositions digestate from a compliance cost to a value stream, which changes the economics of existing biogas operations without requiring new infrastructure.

Hydron Energy's MOF-Based Upgrading Technology Targets the Underserved Economics of Small Landfill Gas Projects

Conventional landfill gas upgrading is technically demanding precisely because of elevated nitrogen concentrations, which require higher operating pressures and multi-stage processing that typically make smaller sites economically unviable. If Hydron's single-stage approach performs as described, it changes the minimum viable scale equation for landfill biogas upgrading, opening a resource category that is globally abundant but commercially stranded. This is a technology validation project, not a commercial deployment, and the distinction matters: the claim is significant, but the proof will come from operational data. The Chilliwack pilot is the mechanism by which that proof gets generated.

In the global energy landscape, few transitions are as analytically complex or as geographically significant as the one currently unfolding across the Australian continent. For decades, Australia has been defined by its vast fossil fuel reserves and its role as a primary energy exporter. But beneath the surface of its industrial sectors, from the intensive livestock operations of the Riverina to the wastewater networks of its coastal cities, a different kind of resource is being revalued.

This is Australia’s biomethane moment, a pivotal juncture where organic waste is being reframed as a strategic energy asset. To understand the gravity of this shift, I spoke with Levent Hilmi, Founder of Resource Loop, a member of the Victorian Bioenergy Network, Head of Growth and partnerships at Run Energy and a veteran with 16 years of experience in landfill gas, utility-scale bioenergy, and international technology consultancy. Levent offers a ground-level perspective on the transition from traditional gas capture to the modern anaerobic digestion (AD) systems now beginning to dot the Australian landscape.

The Methane Mandate

The driver for this transformation is found in the rigorous accounting of national emissions. Methane is a potent climate lever; it possesses a global warming potential over 27 times that of carbon dioxide on a 100-year scale. For a nation committed to Net Zero by 2050, capturing these fugitive emissions is no longer optional; it’s an economic and regulatory necessity.

According to the latest Quarterly Update of Australia’s National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, methane accounts for a significant portion of the national footprint. The agriculture sector remains a dominant contributor, with methane and nitrous oxide from manure management representing nearly 10% of total agricultural emissions. Meanwhile, the waste sector, encompassing landfills and wastewater, contributes approximately 3% of national emissions, a figure that hides the concentrated potential of urban and industrial organic streams.

A Market in Tension

The current Australian landscape is defined by a sophisticated jostling for value. On one side are the large-scale utility operators like Jemena and AusNet, who manage billions of dollars in gas infrastructure. With the national push toward electrification, these companies face the threat of stranded assets. For them, injecting biomethane into the grid is a defensive necessity to keep their pipelines relevant in a decarbonized future.

On the other side are the feedstock owners, large-scale abattoirs, food processors, waste management companies and agricultural hubs. These entities are primary energy users themselves, often requiring immense amounts of process heat. Their analytical dilemma is whether to sell their gas to the grid or use it “behind the meter” to offset their own carbon footprints and energy costs.

There’s a bit of a pull between the behind-the-meter play and the big pipeline operators," Levent explains. "Everyone is trying to understand where the value is and how it affects their business. Network operators are nervous because the country is trying to electrify, so they are pushing feedstock owners to move into the biomethane space."

The Feedstock Bottleneck

Despite the momentum, a critical bottleneck remains: the bankability of long-term feedstock contracts. In a market where landfilling is still relatively inexpensive in certain jurisdictions, and where the value of organic waste is expected to surge in the next five years, large waste management firms like Cleanaway and Veolia are often hesitant to commit to 15-year supply agreements.

“They understand they own the feedstock and the logistics, and they know the value is coming,” Levent notes. “So they won’t commit to long-term contracts just in case the value increases. It’s hard to get a bankable project because you can’t find long-term feedstock supply.”

This tension is compounded by the “cheap gas” reality. Unlike Europe, where biomethane is heavily subsidized or benefits from high carbon pricing, Australian biomethane must compete with historically low conventional gas prices. Levent is blunt about the industrial reality: “Gas is pretty cheap here. If they can get [biomethane] cheap enough, they’ll use it. But if it’s not cheaper than normal gas, many won’t look at it. You have to call it out; if you aren’t realizing that truth, you’re never going to make the sale.”

Learning from the Global Blueprint

Australia possesses a distinct "second-mover advantage." By entering the biomethane race after decades of technological optimization in Europe and North America, Australian developers can adopt proven, de-risked systems. Projects like the Malabar Biomethane Injection Plant in Sydney, the first to inject renewable gas into the Australian network, are serving as the blueprint Levent describes. New players are entering the field with significant pipelines: Delorean Corporation is progressing its SA1 Salisbury facility; Valorify has 13.5 PJ of biomethane in its project pipeline from agricultural residues; and international capital from Canada and Singapore is beginning to flow through firms like Anaergia.

The Social Bridge: Why It Matters to Communities

Beyond the industrial spreadsheets, the biomethane moment carries profound implications for land stewardship. In regional Australia, wastewater from food processing is often stored in massive lagoons, left to evaporate and vent methane into the atmosphere. This is a missed opportunity for resource recovery and a risk to future land health. “We’ve been to facilities where they’re just letting it evaporate with no control,” Levent says.

“There’s a big opportunity not just to offset emissions, but to stop contaminating the land we’re going to use for the next hundred years. No one is really thinking about the next generation. We need to show the younger students where and how we can improve. Just because it’s not perfect now, you don't hide it. You show people and look for help."

The Three-to-Five-Year Horizon

The consensus among authorities like Levent is that while the current year is defined by "talk and tenders," the physical boom is on the near horizon. The next 12 months will likely see a wave of Final Investment Decisions (FIDs), with a three-to-five-year window for these projects to come fully online. The "moment" in Australia is real, but it remains delicate. It requires the government to reduce "red tape," particularly regarding the regulation of digestate (the nutrient-rich byproduct of AD) and the logistics of feedstock hubs. But as Levent suggests, the facts are moving faster than the policy. The industry is no longer waiting for permission; it’s building the infrastructure of a circular economy, one PJ at a time.

The biogas industry is at an inflection point. The technology works. The climate case is settled. The economics are catching up. And yet, the sector is still leaving value on the table, not in infrastructure or policy, but in the rooms where decisions are made. In who gets heard, and who doesn’t.

Simona Amerio has spent her career making that case, not in speeches, but in results.

She’s often been the only woman in rooms where regulatory direction, investment priorities, and long-term strategy were being decided. Not once. Not in some formative early-career moment she can now look back on with perspective. Routinely. What Simona Amerio did at those tables is the thing that is hardest to explain and most important to understand.

She didn’t wait. She didn’t perform a version of herself calibrated to make the room comfortable. She didn’t shrink into the edges of conversations where she had every right to be at the center. And she didn’t carry her exclusion as a grievance; she carried it as information.

Why Energy Is Where Systems Change

Simona is an internationally recognized leader working at the intersection of sustainability, energy, and regulatory systems at Ferrero, with more than 20 years of industry experience, and a recipient of the 2025 EBA SheLeads Award, a distinction that extends well beyond individual accomplishment. It recognizes women who are not only advancing the biogas and biomethane sector, but are also helping to shape a more inclusive and equitable energy landscape.

She’s done it in a space that remains, as she would tell you directly, still overwhelmingly male.

She’s built her career in the kind of technical, regulatory, and strategic complexity that doesn’t make headlines but determines everything: the decisions that either embed sustainability into the very bones of how industry operates, or leave it as a statement of aspiration that never quite becomes real.

The Gap Between Belief & Action

There is a number that sits at the heart of this story, and it comes not from Simona but from the World Biogas Association‘s own research. In 2024, the WBA surveyed the global biogas sector on gender representation. The findings were, depending on your vantage point, either a sign of progress or a portrait of a problem that has been politely acknowledged for years without being structurally addressed.

Women make up 28% of the biogas workforce. In senior management, that figure drops to 24%. Only 11% of organisations surveyed have achieved anything approaching gender parity in their leadership teams. The gender employment rate gap in the energy sector overall sits at 65%, compared to 26% across non-energy sectors.

And then there’s this: 93% of respondents to the same survey said they believe diversity has a positive impact on business performance.

Ninety-three percent believe it. Eleven percent have built it.

That gap, between knowing and doing, between intention and structure, is the thing that Simona has spent her career navigating from the inside. And it’s the thing that the biogas industry, and the energy sector more broadly, has not yet found the will to close.

What It Really Takes to Be Heard

Ask Simona what it actually feels like to navigate spaces where you are underrepresented, and she doesn’t give you the answer you might expect. She doesn’t describe exhaustion, or frustration, or the particular loneliness of being visible in the wrong way. She describes something more piercing than any of those things.

“It sharpens you,” she says. “You become precise, intentional, and fearless in how you contribute.”

What she’s describing is a kind of discipline imposed by circumstance, the way that operating in a system that doesn’t automatically make space for you forces a clarity that more comfortable environments can allow you to avoid. Preparation as armour. Purpose as authority. The combination, she says, makes your voice unstoppable.

But there is something underneath that answer worth pulling at. Because the sharpening she describes is real, and it is also a tax. Every hour a woman spends becoming precise enough to be heard in a room that wasn’t built for her is an hour not spent on the work itself. The talent is being spent on the wrong problem; instead of driving innovation, it’s being used to prove belonging. The sector is paying for this, in ways it doesn’t measure and largely doesn’t see.

No One Is Sending an Invitation

When asked what she would say to women who are waiting to be invited into the conversation, her answer is three sentences that land like a detonation.

“No invitation is coming, and that is freedom. Step in, speak up. Let your thinking earn your place.”

Said plainly, without bitterness, by a woman who has operated at the highest levels of a male-dominated industry for years. It’s the most honest assessment of where the sector currently stands. She’s not counselling acceptance of the status quo. She’s counselling women not to wait for the status quo to change before they act. The distinction is everything. But she is equally clear about where the responsibility lies for those with the power to change the room itself.

“Leaders must move from awareness to accountability,” she says. “Inclusion must be embedded as a driver of performance, not a side conversation.”

The WBA data reflects exactly the gap she is naming. 71% of organisations now have an equality and diversity policy, up from 60% in 2022, a genuine improvement. But only 35% collect gender equality data. Only 45% have a formal group dedicated to the work. The sector is becoming fluent in the language of inclusion. The structural accountability that would make that language real, the measurement, the targets, the traces in promotion decisions and leadership appointments, is still largely absent.

“Talk communicates intention,” Simona says. “Action shapes reality. True inclusion leaves measurable traces in leadership, promotion, and decision-making structures.”

Measurable traces, not statements of commitment on a website. Not a working group with no authority. Traces. The kind you can point to and count.

When There’s Only One Seat

There is a part of this conversation that rarely surfaces in public because it sits in uncomfortable territory, and Simona goes there with the same directness she brings to everything else. In environments where women are scarce, the dynamics between women can become complicated. When there is effectively one seat at the table, competition for it can be real. When visibility is a limited resource, the instinct to protect it rather than share it can take hold. These are not failures of character; they are predictable responses to a system built on scarcity. But they compound the problem, and they deserve to be named.

"When women lift each other up," she says, "challenges become opportunities for innovation, influence, and collective impact."

What she’s describing as the alternative is not solidarity as an abstract moral stance. It’s solidarity as a strategy. A rising tide. The deliberate opening of doors. It only becomes fully possible, she implies, when the scarcity that creates the competition is itself addressed, when there are enough seats at enough tables that protecting any single one feels less urgent. Which is, again, a structural argument wearing the clothes of an interpersonal one.

You Already Belong Here

Ten years from now, Simona has a clear picture of what success looks like.

“I want this conversation to be obsolete. Not because the work is done, but because inclusion will be instinctive, embedded, and unquestioned.”

Obsolete. It is a striking word to reach for. Not resolved, not improved, obsolete. The kind of thing future generations read about and struggle to believe was ever necessary to argue for. She’s not asking for gradual progress. She’s asking for a transformation complete enough that the argument disappears entirely.

To the young women standing at the beginning of a career in energy or biogas or beyond, wondering whether there is space for them, she is unambiguous.

And to the industry itself, to the leaders in the rooms where the decisions are made, whether women are present in those rooms or not, her message is stripped of sentiment entirely.

The Opportunity in Front of Us

The WBA survey asked respondents whether they believe there are barriers to women being promoted in the biogas industry. 49% said yes. Half the sector's own workforce, acknowledging out loud that the system they work within is not yet fair. The other half said no.

Which means either that progress has been made, and it has, genuinely, incrementally, or that the barriers have become invisible to the people not navigating them. Probably both. What Simona Amerio represents, in this conversation, in her career, in the rooms she has walked into and refused to be made smaller by, is a standard of what leadership in this industry can look like when it stops being defined by who has historically been in the room. She’s not asking to be an exception. She’s making the case, through everything she says and everything she has built, that the exception should become the rule. And to the sector itself, her final message is the one that every leader in every room should carry into the next decision they make.

The biogas industry is standing in front of one of the most significant opportunities in the history of renewable energy. The systems are ready. The moment is here. The only question is who gets to build the future: everyone who can, or only those who always have.

Flávio Ascenco will tell you, with the particular candour of someone who has spent years watching the same avoidable mistakes repeat themselves across continents, that the biogas industry has a consistency problem. That plants fail not because the technology is wrong but because the discipline isn’t there. That the sector is full of passion and short on structure. That an enormous amount of value, environmental, economic, and human, is being left on the table every single day.

He will tell you all of that. And then, almost in the same breath, he will tell you that he has never been more excited about where this is all going.

That combination, clear-eyed about the present, genuinely lit up about the future, is what makes Flávio one of the most useful voices in the global biogas conversation right now. His optimism has been hard-earned: through enough site visits, enough underperforming plants, enough conversations with operators who were never given the training they needed, to know exactly what has been holding the industry back. And because he has spent the last several years building something designed to change it.

Agile Biogas Engineering Consultants exists, in Flávio’s own telling, because there was a gap that nobody else was filling. Not a gap in technology, the technology, he is emphatic, has never been the limiting factor. A gap between ambition and execution. The Gap Nobody Talks About

Flávio didn’t come to biogas by accident. He came because the problem was irresistible.

Biogas intersects waste, energy, and agriculture, three sectors that are “messy, human, and essential.” The engineering is intricate. The biology is genuinely humbling. The stakes, for the farms, communities, and food systems that depend on organic waste being managed well, are real and immediate. And underneath all of it is something that Flávio has never stopped finding extraordinary: the idea that what the world treats as a problem, the manure, the food waste, the organic residues that every farm and city and factory produces as a matter of daily life, is actually the feedstock for something enormously valuable.

“Waste is not a burden,” he says. “It’s a resource. Every household, every farm, every factory produces material that can be turned into energy and fertiliser. We’re sitting on an enormous opportunity that most people don’t even see.”

What kept him in the sector, once he arrived, was the gap between that opportunity and what the industry was actually delivering. Plants underperforming for reasons that were entirely fixable. Operators making the same mistakes across different countries because no one had given them the frameworks to make different ones. Organisations with genuine environmental ambition and operations that couldn’t quite translate that ambition into consistent, daily results.

“Even after years in the sector,” he says, “I still see how much value is left on the table.”

For most people, that observation would be discouraging. For Flávio, it is the reason to show up. Every plant that is underperforming for entirely fixable reasons is a plant that could, with the right support, be delivering everything it was designed to deliver. The gap is not a ceiling. It is an invitation.

One Change Could Flip the Industry Overnight

Ask him what the biogas sector is getting right, and the answer is immediate: ambition and innovation. The conversation has moved. Governments, investors, and major energy companies are no longer treating biogas as a niche technology of limited relevance; they are recognising it as strategic infrastructure, essential to decarbonisation, waste management, energy security, and rural economic development simultaneously. The technology itself has matured to a point where, in Flávio’s words, “when plants are run properly, they’re incredibly reliable and efficient.”

That last clause is doing a lot of work. Because the running-properly part is where the industry still has ground to cover, and where Flávio’s focus sits entirely.

The challenge he describes is not complicated, even if solving it requires sustained effort. Biogas is not simple. It’s a biological, chemical, and mechanical system operating simultaneously, and it requires something that the sector has historically underinvested in: operational discipline. Training that reaches operators before they need it rather than after something goes wrong. Accountability structures that outlast the commissioning phase. A shared understanding, at every level of an organisation, of what running a plant well actually demands.

This is the insight that drives everything Agile Biogas does, and it’s more hopeful than it might first appear. Because if the limiting factor is discipline rather than technology, then the path forward doesn’t require a breakthrough that hasn’t happened yet. It requires doing what already works, more consistently, in more places, with better support for the people doing it.

Overnight. Not over a decade of incremental improvement. Not pending some future policy framework or capital deployment. Overnight, because the potential is already there, in plants that already exist, waiting to be properly unlocked.

The lessons that travel

One of the things that strikes you about Flávio is the global fluency he brings to this conversation. He’s worked across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and beyond, advising everyone from multinational energy companies to individual farmers planning their first digester. And what he’s found, consistently, is that the surface variables change, the regulatory environment, the culture, the scale, the feedstock, but the underlying dynamics do not.

Europe’s policy frameworks create structure but can also breed complacency, a belief that compliance and performance are the same thing. They aren’t. Asia moves faster, more entrepreneurially, more willing to experiment without waiting for a green light. And then there is Brazil, which Flávio talks about with a particular energy, as a market that understands the link between agriculture, energy, and circularity at a scale and with a pragmatism that the rest of the world is still working to match.

“Projects are built to solve real problems, not to tick policy boxes,” he says. “That mindset is something the rest of the world could learn from.”

What this global vantage point gives him, and what makes Agile Biogas genuinely unusual, is the ability to carry solutions across borders. A lesson learned on a farm in Europe becomes applicable in a municipal facility in Asia. A framework developed for a multinational becomes adaptable for a cooperative. The principles of good operation don’t change with geography. Which means the improvements Flávio is driving in one corner of the world are not isolated wins. They are the blueprint that’s replicable everywhere.

Walk Before The Run

There is a phrase Flávio uses that captures something important about where he stands relative to the urgency the climate moment is creating.

“The industry must learn how to walk before it can run,” he says. “And only when you can run can you explore competition levels such as a 10k, a half marathon, or a full marathon.”

In a moment when the pressure to scale everything faster is intense and legitimate, the idea of getting the foundations right first can sound almost conservative. But Flávio’s point is the opposite of cautious. He is arguing that the path to genuine scale, to thousands of plants running reliably, to biogas recognised as essential infrastructure, to the sector delivering on its full climate and economic potential, runs directly through operational excellence, not around it. Scaling without foundations doesn’t accelerate progress. It replicates failure at volume.

And the destination he is moving toward, once those foundations are in place, is genuinely extraordinary. A world in which the organic waste produced by every farm, every city, every food manufacturer is not a cost to be managed but a resource to be captured. In which biomethane is as unremarkable and indispensable as any other utility. In which the operators who keep these systems running are recognised as the skilled professionals they are, with the training and certification to prove it.

That vision is within reach. Not in some distant future dependent on technology that doesn’t yet exist, but through work that can start today, in the training programs being built, the operational frameworks being deployed, the standards being shaped, the plants that are right now performing at half capacity and waiting for someone to show up and help them do what they were designed to do.

The People Who Make It Happen

The biogas sector is at an inflection point. The ambition is there. The technology is there. The environmental and economic case has never been stronger. What has been missing, the thing that Flávio has dedicated his career to supplying, is the connective tissue between vision and delivery. The frameworks. The training. The accountability. The people who can sit with leadership one day and be out on the digester plant the next, and who understand, from both vantage points, what it actually takes to make a plant run well.

People like that are rare. The fact that they are building the infrastructure to bring that expertise to scale is one of the most genuinely encouraging things about where this industry is headed.

“Biogas is one of the few industries where you can genuinely improve environmental outcomes and operational resilience at the same time,” Flávio says. “That combination keeps me here.”

Before dawn in rural Bangladesh, before the children wake, before the farm demands anything of her, Meena Begum used to go looking for wood.

It was never a short walk. And it was never just wood. It was the hours she would never get back. Hours scraped from the beginning and end of every day, her body bent under the weight of what she’d gathered, returning home to a kitchen that would fill with smoke before the first meal was even cooked. The smoke wasn’t incidental. It was the condition of eating. Of survival. For millions of women across rural Bangladesh, it still is.

This is the reality that Md. Ashrafuzzaman Ashraf set out to change by establishing Greenway Renewable Energy Implementation Organization (GREIO), not just the smoke, but the entire interlocking system of poverty, labor, and environmental strain that produced it. From the beginning, he understood that solving one part of the problem required addressing the whole system.

That insight, deceptively simple yet structurally powerful, has driven the installation of over 4,000 household biogas systems across 27 districts of Bangladesh. These systems are collectively returning hundreds of thousands of hours of time, improving indoor air quality, and restoring soil health for the farmers who need it most.

GREIO works primarily with low-income rural households, particularly small livestock farmers, who are at the center of this energy–agriculture transition.

The Triple Burden of Traditional Fuel

To understand the necessity of GREIO’s work, you must grasp the structural weight of what rural Bangladeshi families manage every single day.

The traditional hearth relies on firewood, crop residues, and dried cow dung. It’s far from romantic or pastoral; it’s a system with real costs, paid with real lives. Women and children breathe smoke with every meal, often in poorly ventilated rooms, year after year. The damage accumulates slowly, surfacing in chronic respiratory problems decades later. Collecting fuel takes hours, mostly shouldered by women, hours that could otherwise be spent in school, childcare, or small income-generating activities that might lift families out of subsistence.

And beneath it all, the environmental toll grows. Every tree felled for cooking fuel is one fewer standing. Every pile of unmanaged livestock waste, left to decompose in the open, releases methane into an already overburdened atmosphere.

The Circular Loop: Where Waste Becomes Wealth

The engineering of a household biogas digester, a sealed chamber that converts organic waste into cooking gas, is well established. What GREIO has mastered is something more complex: making the full circular system visible, understandable, and practical for communities that have long viewed livestock waste as a burden rather than a resource.

At the household level, the system begins with what farmers already have, manure from cows or goats that are part of daily life. This waste is fed into the digester and transformed into two valuable outputs: clean biogas for cooking and bio-slurry, a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer.

This model is especially effective for small livestock-owning households, as it converts their daily manure into both energy and agricultural inputs, creating immediate and tangible value.

The results are clear and measurable. Farmers using bio-slurry report improved soil structure, better moisture retention, and increased nutrient availability, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This leads to stronger crop yields while reducing dependence on costly chemical fertilizers. Over time, continued use enhances soil fertility rather than depleting it, improving resilience to drought, irregular rainfall, and pests.

What this creates in practice is a fundamental shift in perception. Manure is no longer treated as waste to be managed, it becomes a resource to be utilized. Farms become more productive, input costs decrease, and households move toward greater economic stability.

The Human Metric: A Study in Dignity

If you measure GREIO’s impact only in terms of carbon reduction or technical output, you miss the true heartbeat of this story: the restoration of dignity and control over daily life.

When Meena Begum’s biogas digester was installed and became operational, the first change was simple but profound. She no longer had to leave before dawn in search of firewood. The hours spent gathering fuel disappeared. The smoke-filled kitchen disappeared. The chronic respiratory irritation she had long accepted as the cost of cooking disappeared.

In their place came something far more valuable: time. And what Meena did with that time tells the real story. She reinvested it into her farm, applying bio-slurry from the digester to her crops. Over time, she saw her yields increase while her spending on chemical fertilizers declined. What had once been a subsistence-level operation, barely sustainable and heavily dependent on costly inputs, began to grow into a more stable and profitable livelihood.

Today, she is no longer just a beneficiary. She has become an example within her community. When neighbours see her thriving garden and step into her clean, smoke-free kitchen, they see a practical and achievable pathway for themselves. This ripple effect is real, and it’s reflected in every new household that adopts the system after witnessing a neighbor’s transformation.

What It Actually Takes: The Lessons Scaling Taught

Building more than 4,000 systems across 27 districts is not simply a logistics story; it’s, above all, a story of trust.

When GREIO first began its work, Ashraf assumed that once communities understood the benefits of biogas, adoption would follow naturally. “We quickly learned,” he says, “that building trust within the community was just as important as the technology itself.” Families were initially skeptical. The idea of cooking with gas produced from livestock waste was, for many, unfamiliar and difficult to believe.

Demonstrations helped, but what truly accelerated adoption was visible success within the community. When one household began using the system effectively, neighbours took notice, asked questions, and gradually became more open to adopting the technology themselves.

This remains the foundation of the model today. A successful rollout in a new village starts with engagement from community leaders, whose support often determines whether the community is willing to try something new. It then continues with hands-on training to ensure that households can properly operate and maintain their systems over the long term.

Without proper training and follow-up support, system performance can decline, confidence can erode, and the technology itself may be blamed for what is ultimately a gap in implementation. These were lessons GREIO learned early and built into their approach moving forward.

As a result, the rollout process today goes far beyond installation. It combines technical implementation with community engagement: careful site selection, household-level training, ongoing technical support, and the deliberate cultivation of peer learning. Each successful installation becomes a demonstration site, encouraging the next family to take the step forward.

Scaling the Momentum: The E-CoFamily Vision

As GREIO moves into its next phase, the individual household digester is becoming the foundation of something much larger.

The E-CoFamily model transforms standalone household systems into a shared, community-based energy and resource network. Within this model, clusters of households are connected, allowing biogas and bio-slurry to be managed and utilized collectively. This approach maximizes energy efficiency and agricultural productivity at the village level, rather than limiting benefits to individual households.

For example, multiple families can share a coordinated cluster of digesters, where organic waste is managed collectively, gas is distributed through a small local network, and bio-slurry is applied more efficiently across farmland. As a result, both efficiency and resilience increase significantly.

This model is particularly effective in rural communities with small livestock farmers, where resource sharing can unlock greater value from limited inputs.

When integrated with smart monitoring systems and hybrid renewable solutions, such as solar energy, the E-CoFamily model becomes a scalable and adaptable framework. In Ashraf’s view, it represents a replicable blueprint that can extend beyond Bangladesh and be applied in similar agricultural contexts globally.

The Carbon Bridge: Unlocking What’s Needed

The single greatest barrier between GREIO’s current reach and its full potential is not technology; it’s financing. More specifically, it’s the upfront cost of installation for the rural families who would benefit most, yet are least able to afford it.

Most of these households are low-income small livestock farmers. While the long-term benefits of biogas are clear, the initial investment remains a critical obstacle without external support or subsidy.

This is where carbon markets present a compelling structural solution. The logic is straightforward: household biogas digesters capture methane that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and significantly reduce reliance on firewood, thereby lowering deforestation pressure. Both outcomes generate measurable and verifiable greenhouse gas reductions.

If these emission reductions can be effectively monetized through carbon credits, the resulting revenue could subsidize or even fully cover the installation costs. This would make biogas systems accessible at scale for low-income households, unlocking rapid expansion.

However, significant barriers remain. Verifying emissions reductions across thousands of small, geographically dispersed systems is complex and costly. Aggregating these systems into a viable carbon project requires coordination mechanisms and digital infrastructure that are not yet fully developed at scale. In addition, existing certification frameworks are largely designed for centralized, industrial-scale projects, making them difficult to apply in rural, decentralized contexts like Bangladesh.

The opportunity is clear, but so is the urgency. As the climate crisis accelerates, delays in unlocking these financing mechanisms carry costs that extend far beyond economics.

A Global Call

The work being done in Bangladesh is no longer a local proof of concept; it’s a scalable model. The circular logic turning waste into energy, energy into fertilizer, fertilizer into healthier soil, and healthier soil into stronger yields and more stable household economies is not unique to Bangladesh. It’s relevant wherever smallholder agriculture, livestock management, and energy poverty intersect. The model is particularly effective in communities where small livestock ownership is common, as it directly converts animal waste into energy and agricultural value.

What GREIO is seeking now is a partnership. This includes carbon finance organizations willing to develop aggregation systems that make small-scale verification viable; research institutions that can enhance bio-slurry applications across different crops and soil conditions; NGOs with strong community networks in new regions; and private sector partners capable of supporting large-scale implementation and logistics.

The E-CoFamily model is ready for expansion. The technology is proven. The human impact is visible and measurable. What remains is the collective decision of the international community to recognize, support, and invest in a model that delivers across energy access, agriculture, and climate goals. The opportunity is time-sensitive. As climate pressures intensify, the need for scalable, community-based solutions becomes more urgent.

Before dawn, in a village in rural Bangladesh, Meena Begum is no longer searching for firewood. She is already in her garden. This is what progress looks like, not as an abstract concept, but as a quiet, tangible change in everyday life.

In October 1973, Arab OPEC members imposed an oil embargo on the West, and within weeks, the price of crude quadrupled. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and severed the pipeline gas supply on which Europe had built a dependency. In February 2026, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne oil and LNG transits daily, became impassable for commercial shipping within days. Three crises, five decades apart, structurally similar.

“The war in the Middle East is creating a major energy crisis, including the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. In the absence of a swift resolution, the impacts on energy markets and economies are set to become more and more severe,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

In each case, a geopolitical decision made in a region that importing nations could neither influence nor control was sufficient to expose the brittleness of systems that had, until that moment, appeared to function perfectly well. In each case, prices spiked, industries faltered, and governments scrambled for emergency measures. In each case, analysts reached for the same word: unprecedented. And in each case, the crisis was not the cause of the vulnerability. It was the occasion on which an existing vulnerability became undeniable.

There is a version of this story that ends differently. Denmark found it after 1973, and the country has lived inside that version ever since. As one of the world’s leaders in energy independence, the Danish answer was not a diplomatic one, nor a military one. It was architectural. The country rebuilt its energy system from the ground up around localised, distributed, domestically sourced fuels, and one of the central pillars of that rebuild was biogas.

As Brent crude crosses 100 USD per barrel and European LNG prices surge in response to Hormuz, the case for that architectural answer has never been more legible. This is not a new argument. It is a recurring one, and the clarifying truth is that the tools to act on it are more mature, more proven, and more economically competitive than they have ever been.

1973: The Last Time the Ground Gave Way

The first oil shock is worth examining as historical context and as a diagnostic template, because the pattern it established has repeated with notable fidelity ever since. By the early 1970s, the industrialised world had drifted, with barely a thought, into near-total dependence on Middle Eastern oil. Europe and Japan were sourcing between 60% and 80% of their total energy from that single region. Nobody particularly worried about this because nothing had yet gone wrong, and the comfortable performance of the recent past had been mistaken for structural security.

When the embargo landed, the reckoning was swift and severe. GDP fell 7% in Japan, 4.7% in the United States, and over 2% across Europe. Petrol stations run dry across Europe and North America. Germany bans driving on Sundays. Nixon cuts highway speed limits and floats the idea of ‘Project Independence.’ In Britain, Edward Heath warns the nation to brace for the hardest Christmas since the Second World War. What made the crisis so damaging was not the embargo itself but the decades of structural complacency that preceded it: the industrial world had been wasteful in its energy use, woefully underdeveloped in its conservation measures, and had failed entirely to explore alternatives to the single source on which it had staked everything.

That failure of foresight is what makes 1973 a template. The crisis did not manufacture the dependency; it disclosed it. And disclosure, without the institutional memory to act on what is disclosed, is not the same as a lesson learned.

Denmark Didn’t Just Diversify, They Localised

Most nations responded to 1973 with the policy equivalent of scrambling: strategic petroleum reserves, temporary rationing measures, and new offshore oil exploration. These were responses to the symptom, not the disease. One country, however, took a structurally different approach, and the contrast is instructive.

In 1972, an astonishing ~90% of Denmark’s energy supply came from imported oil. The country was, perhaps, more exposed than anyone. Yet where others clambered for a new supplier, Denmark asked a harder and more enduring question: what would it take to never be in this position again? The answer it arrived at was not diversification in the conventional sense, swapping one external dependency for another, but localisation. A fundamental reconception of where energy comes from and who controls it.

Denmark’s 1979 Heat Supply Act established district heating and combined heat and power (CHP) as the backbone of a new national energy architecture. CHP is elegantly simple in principle: generate electricity and capture the heat that would otherwise be wasted, then distribute it through underground pipe networks to homes and businesses. Decentralised CHP plants began appearing in towns, fired not by imported crude but by domestic fuels: natural gas, straw, wood waste, and eventually, biogas. Energy ceased to be something that arrived from thousands of miles away and became something that happened locally, from local resources.

Between 1980 and 2009, the Danish economy grew by 80% while total energy consumption rose by only 13.7%, and carbon dioxide emissions actually fell by nearly 14%. A 1987 biogas action plan brought anaerobic digestion formally into the national energy fold. Denmark had achieved what most economists still treat as hypothetical: a sustained decoupling of economic growth from energy consumption.

What made it work, though, was not technology; it was consistency. The Danes maintained the same overarching policy priorities, energy independence, fuel diversification, efficiency across multiple governments and multiple decades. This matters because policy consistency is, in practice, extraordinarily rare. Most countries manage a crisis, declare it resolved once prices stabilise, and imperceptibly drift back toward comfortable dependency. Denmark refused to do that. That refusal is the actual lesson

We’ve Been Here Before, We Just Didn’t Learn Fast Enough

In 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine severed Europe’s reliance on Russian natural gas, which equated to roughly 40% of its supply at the time, in a matter of months. The parallels to 1973 were not merely suggestive; they were structural. Once again, geopolitical events in a distant region exposed a vulnerability that had been accumulating, unsuspected and unexamined, for years. Once again, prices spiked, industries faltered, and policymakers rushed. The crisis did not build the problem. It made it undeniable.

As of 2024, the European Union consumes approximately 332 billion cubic metres of gas annually, of which 273 billion cubic metres are imported. Europe still sources 90% of its gas consumption from external suppliers, leaving its industrial base and consumers structurally exposed to forces entirely beyond its control. A single pipeline decision, a single political rupture, and the wheels come off again.

Biogas: Local, Circular, Already Operational

This is where biogas enters the conversation. Already operational, already scaling, and already filling the gap that imported fossil gas left behind. It’s worth dwelling on that distinction, because the tendency in energy discussions is to treat renewables as a category of promising aspiration rather than present-day industry. Biomethane does not require that framing.

Biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion, the microbial breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. The feedstocks are not exotic: agricultural residues, manure, food waste, sewage sludge, and industrial organic by-products. The energy source is, in essence, the waste stream of modern civilisation. When upgraded to biomethane, refined to the same quality as natural gas, it flows directly into the existing gas grid and powers homes, vehicles, and industrial processes without any modification to infrastructure.

The European Biogas Association’s 2025 Statistical Report reveals the current state of play with notable clarity: Europe now produces 22 billion cubic metres of biogas and biomethane annually. There are 1,620 biomethane-producing facilities across the continent, with 86% directly connected to the gas grid. Over €28 billion in private investment has been committed to biomethane development ahead of 2030. By any reasonable measure, this is no pilot program.

The scale of what remains untapped is even more striking. According to the World Biogas Association and IEA analysis, globally, only around 5% of the total sustainable potential for biogas and biomethane production is currently being utilised. The IEA estimates that nearly 1 trillion cubic metres of natural gas equivalent could be produced each year sustainably from today’s organic waste streams alone, equivalent to roughly a quarter of total global natural gas demand. Even the EU, the world leader in this space, harnesses only around 40% of its potential from waste feedstocks. The resource constraint, to be blunt, is not the issue.

We are not lacking resources. We are underutilising them.

Biogas also offers something that wind and solar, by their very nature, cannot: dispatchability. It can be turned on when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing. It provides the grid stability that intermittent generation, by definition, cannot guarantee. The EBA’s latest report notes that Europe’s dispatchable power generation capacity has actually declined from 424 GW in 2012 to around 380 GW in 2023, even as the demand for flexible, reliable generation has grown. Biomethane is uniquely positioned to fill that gap, as a fuel and as a grid asset in the most literal sense.

There is also a circular economy dimension that receives far less attention than it deserves. The digestate left over after biogas production is a nutrient-rich organic fertiliser with the potential to replace 17% of the EU’s nitrogen-based fertiliser demand today, and projected sector growth suggests it could substitute over 65% of non-renewable nitrogen in the EU by 2040. This matters enormously when Europe imported 11.2 million tonnes of nitrogen-based fertilisers in 2024, much of it derived directly from fossil fuels. A biogas facility, viewed properly, is not an energy plant with a waste problem. It’s a closed loop, organic matter in, energy and soil fertility out.

The Same Crisis, No Longer the Same Excuses

One of the more enduring observations to emerge from retrospective analyses of the 1973 crisis is that energy policy is not purely an economic matter; it is a matter of security and social continuity. What history does suggest, with some consistency, is that the decisions made in the relative calm between crises tend to prioritise what is immediately available over what is structurally sound, and that the gap between those two things only becomes visible when the next shock arrives. Whether that reflects a failure of markets, of institutions, or simply of political imagination is a question worth examining. What is less debatable is the pattern itself.

The irony of the current moment is that the technology has finally caught up with the lesson history has been trying to teach. In 1973, the alternatives to fossil fuels were nascent, prohibitively expensive, or largely theoretical. There was a genuine structural reason why energy diversification was a generational project. That argument no longer holds. The tools exist, the feedstocks exist, the grid infrastructure exists. What has historically been absent is the sustained political will to treat resilience as an end in itself, not merely a crisis-era priority to be unobtrusively retired when prices fall.

Denmark’s energy transformation illustrated this plainly. The country built a system that was intentionally distributed, locally anchored, and not always the cheapest option in any single year, and it turned out to be spectacularly robust. While other European states rebuilt dependency on a new external supplier, Denmark constructed something that could not be switched off by a foreign political decision. That is the real inheritance of the 1973 crisis.

Biogas, and biomethane specifically, is the natural extension of that logic for the current moment. It’s local by definition, it’s dispatchable, it’s circular, it’s already functioning at scale across 25 European countries, with more entering the market each year.

The EBA’s projections suggest that by 2040, biogases could meet up to 80% of EU gaseous fuel demand. That figure was inconceivable in 1973. It’s a feasible milestone today.

The pattern: crisis, scramble, recovery, complacency, repeat, has now cycled through three iterations in fifty years. Each time, the tools available to break the cycle have been more developed than the last. Each time, the window between crisis and complacency has closed before the structural work was completed. The question, in March 2026, as tankers sit idle outside the Strait of Hormuz and European energy ministers convene emergency sessions, is whether this iteration will be any different.
